Dr. James McHugh, University of Southern California, presents: "Brewing/Assembling a Book about Sura: Reflections on the Study of Alcohol, Drugs, and Intoxication in India."

James McHugh is Associate Professor of South Asian religions at the University of Southern California specializing in the material culture of premodern South Asia. His book Sandlewood and Carrion: Smell in Indian Religion and Culture explored the significance of odors, perfumes, and aromatics in India. 

His second book, An Unholy Brew: Alcohol in Indian History and Religions, published in October 2021, is the first comprehensive book on alcohol in premodern India, highlighting the richness of drinking culture and the creation of alcoholic drinks in premodern India.
